Yes, it will certainly help but robotics is also about mechanical engineering, hydraulics, and electronics. Robotics has become a specialized course of study in itself since these different fields have to all be closely integrated. NASA is probably the best place for general information – see link below.

I work with robotic mechanisms for industry. Just about all the control is via computers. I don't see how a robot can work without a computer! Most of the work, as a matter of fact, is programming the controllers and transducers that make the robot go. That's mostly software.
